About this Item

Description:

First trade edition. Quarto. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt vignette and titles to the upper board and gilt titles and pictorial decoration to the spine. Top edge stained blue, the others untrimmed. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated with 15 tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue-guards, illustrated title page, and numerous head- and tail-pieces. viii, 136pp. A very good copy, the binding square and secure. The contents with some light scattered foxing (predominantly to the preliminary pages) and a very minor hole to the paper covering the front hinge between the front pastedown and endpaper are otherwise in good order. Arthur Rackham's beautifully-illustrated edition of this German romantic fairytale, first published in 1811, in which the water spirit Undine seeks to marry a human - a knight named Hulbrand - in order to gain an immortal soul. The tale notably influence Hans Christian Andersen whilst he was writing 'The Little Mermaid'. Seller Inventory # 1555
