Grey cloth with gilt lifebuoy design on cover. 8vo. 304pp. First edition, first issue with publisher's windmill device on title page, no "Reserved for the Colonies" notice on copyright page and with publisher's 32 page catalogue at rear. In these four stories, written between 1900 and 1902, Conrad bid gradual farewell to his adventurous life at sea and began to confront the more daunting complexities of life on land in the twentieth century. A worn copy with some rubbing and corner wear to the covers and some spotting to the rear cover at the bottom. The spine is rubbed at the edges and has some chipping at the top. The text is good with some light soiling and wear and some light spotting to the half-title and title page. There is a bookplate at front with an ink number above it and some offset to the facing flyleaf. Seller Inventory # 9126
