Item description from seller

Publication: London, Chatto & Windus, 1974 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 164. Condition Report: Very Good. The book remains structurally sound with a firm, tight binding and clean, crisp internal pages that are free from foxing or notable wear. The primary physical flaw is severe sun-fading to the publisher's green cloth along the spine and the upper edges of the boards, a common issue where light has penetrated over time, which has uniformly turned the affected areas to a tan shade, though the gilt spine lettering remains strikingly bright and unoxidised. The text block edges are well-preserved with only a negligible hint of dustiness to the top edge. The accompanying original dust jacket presents beautifully over the sunned boards; it is clean, vibrant, and unclipped, displaying only minor shelf-wear at the extreme corners and spine ends, easily justifying its solid grade despite the fading to the cloth beneath. Catalogue Note: This is a true first printing of George Mackay Brown's evocative collection, with no secondary printings indicated on the copyright page. The text is charmingly complemented by the line drawings of Ian MacInnes, whose distinctive artwork also graces the vivid front panel of the dust jacket. This copy retains its publisher's pricing sticker on the front flap. While this title remains reasonably common on the secondary market, finding a copy with such a well-preserved and unclipped dust jacket remains a desirable acquisition for collectors of modern Scottish literature and Orkney folklore, offering excellent shelf presence. In The Two Fiddlers, George Mackay Brown masterfully reimagines the ancient myths, Viking legends, and rich folklore of the Orkney Islands. From vanishing islands and tragic selkies to giantesses grinding salt at the bottom of the sea, this enchanting collection breathes new life into the region's cultural heritage. Through his lyrical, poetic prose, Brown weaves a captivating tapestry of magic and island life that continues to enchant readers and solidify his enduring legacy as one of Scotland's premier storytellers.…
