Item description from seller

Pamphlet of 47 pp. . Deaccessioned from the old Mercantile Library of Philadelphia, their light stamp to the title page and with old light brown leather covered boards, front board detached. Very scarce; OCLC located only one copy of the printed pamphlet; not in the AAS catalog. Exposition on the 1844 anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia (variously called the Prayer Riots, Nativist Riots, Bible Riots). They took place on May 6,7 and 8, and again on July 6 and 7. As this papmplet notes only the May riots, it can be reasonably postulated that it was printed either in May or June of that year. In the months prior to the riots, certain nativist groups spread the unfounded rumor that the Catholic establishment was trying to have the Bible removed from schools. A number of Catholic churches were burned and fighting between nativists and soldiers sent to protect St. Philip Neri Church resulted iun several casualties. One by-product of this civil unrest was the reform of local law enforcement which was proven to have been ineffective.
