Item description from seller

First edition of this attack on the anti-opium lobby, based on the author's 15 years in Hong Kong working as a solicitor. "If opium smoking produced the evil consequences alleged, Hong Kong is unquestionably the place where those consequences would be found in their fullest force. They are not to be found there in the slightest degree" (p. 7). Brereton (1824-1887) joined the Hong Kong firm of Henry Charles Caldwell in 1867 and became a partner in 1870. An appendix the text of an Imperial Maritime Customs Service yellow book on consumption of the drug, which was commissioned by Sir Robert Hart. Octavo. Tables in text; 46 pp. publisher's advertisements at end. Original brown diagonal-grain cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, boards panelled in blind, brown coated endpapers. Ex-Colonial Office Library, with its name stamped in blind on boards, shelf label, and stamps on endpapers, title page, and periodically in text; recent ownership inscription on rear pastedown. Spine toned and marked, head consolidated with adhesive: very good. …
