VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book. "A Trip to Music-Land - A Fairy Tale" By Emma L. Shedlock. Illustrator: J. King James. This is the First Edition, published by Blackie & Son, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh, 1876. 4to, 25.4 cm x 19.3 cm x 2 cm. Blue cloth-covered bevelled boards with gilt & black embossed lettering & decoration on spine & front cover, Clear embossed motif & framing on back cover, All edges gilt, Brown endpapers, no dust-jacket. Weight: 828 Grams. This is an extremely rare book, CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY IN GOOD CLEAN CONDITION considering it is a 19th century publication. However, this book is rather falling apart, covers are off & separated, contents mostly loose. 4 illustrations plates and pages 49 to 56 are missing. There is much outer wear & tear: Spine is very scuffed, damaged, marked and incomplete, attached to front cover only. Covers are also very scuffed & marked, discoloured & faded in places, some bumps, holes & tears in cloth, much edge wear. Gilt bright on front cover, worn away in places. Corners bumped & frayed with boards exposed & worn away. Numerous pages are loose & have frayed edges. The remaining plates are beautiful with some tanning & foxing, text pages also age tanned & occasionally foxed. VERY RARE 19TH CENTURY BOOK, BEAUTIFUL PLATES INSIDE!!! Full title in book: "A Trip to Music-Land - A Fairy Tale, Forming an Allegorical and Pictorial Exposition of the Elements of Music". Originally 'With 20 Full-Page Pictures of Highly Humorous Characters" by J. King James, however, 4 plates are missing.
