The First UK printing published by Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., London in 1894 in three volumes. The BOOKS are in exceptional near Fine condition. Original publisher's buff-coloured cloth, blocked and lettered in blue. Light spotting to the text-block and slight offsetting to the end papers of each volume. A neat previous owner's bookplate tipped in to the front blank end paper of Vol.1 only. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Each book is housed in a morocco chemise within a custom half morocco slipcase with gilt titling. The slipcase has some mild rubbing in places. Accompanied by a loosely inserted 4 page H/W letter dated 'Apr 1. 95' referring to the novel 'Trilby'. This is the true first edition of Du maurier's masterpiece (published a year prior to the better known first illustrated edition), one of the most popular novels of the 1890s. 'Trilby' forever altered the public perception of hypnotism with its strikingly original creation of the character Svengali, one of the most memorable Victorian characters of all time (who also served as the role model for Gaston Leroux's 'Phantom of the Opera'). Extremely scarce to find in such condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Seller Inventory # ABE-1569842189009
