On early editions of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the codes "8-3" and "H-5" on the copyright page are publisher's printing codes used by Harper & Brothers to indicate the publication date and tracking data. They translate to: 8-3: The month and year of publication. 8 stands for August (the 8th month) and 3 stands for 1943, marking its original publication date of August 1943. H-5: Harper's internal date and manufacturing letters. In their system, H stands for the month of August, and 5 is a code identifying a specific printing batch, edition run, or production facility used during World War II-era paper conservation. If you are looking at a copy with these exact markings, you have one of the highly collectible first-year printing runs of Betty Smith's classic.
