A Treatise on Probability began as Keynes's fellowship dissertation at King's College, Cambridge in 1908. In the work, he seeks to establish a mathematical basis for probability theory, reflecting the work of Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead on symbolic logic. Russell writes of this work "the mathematical calculus is astonishingly powerful, considering the very restricted premises which form its foundation. the book as a whole is one which it is impossible to praise too highly" (quoted in DSB). Mark Blaug notes that the work "is well-known among philosophers as a leading example, indeed the leading example, of the subjective approach to the logical foundations of probability" (Blaug, p. 4) Moggridge A 3.1. Mark Blaug, John Maynard Keynes: Life, Ideas, Legacy, 1990. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers ruled in blind.
