Only three national parks have more visitors each year than the Natchez Trace Parkway, a national park of great natural beauty and historical significance that follows a 450-mile course from Nashville, Tennessee, to Natchez, Mississippi. First used as a vital transportation link by Native Americans and later by "kaintucks" and frontiersmen, today the Trace is experienced by more than 13 million visitors a year.
Traveling the Trace explores the parkway and sights within 30 miles of either side of the Natchez Trace. In addition to the well-known stops, the authors visit side roads most tourists ignore or don't know exist. It is a guide to:
- 25 Civil War sites
- 73 antebellum homes
- 65 museums and art galleries
- 78 antique shops and malls
- 72 bed and breakfasts
- 56 campgrounds
- 175 restaurants
- 49 spots for water sports and a whole lot more
"One of the ten most outstanding scenic byways in America." ?Scenic Byways Bulletin
"Distances on the Natchez Trace are measured as much in places, people, and history as in miles." ?Southern Living

From the Publisher
Whenever you get the desire to travel from Nashville, Tenn. to Natchez, Miss. (or anywhere in between) the way the postriders did nearly two hundred years ago this is the guidebook for you. TRAVELING THE TRACE is "a fascinating book for any Tennessee or Southern history buff, or people just wanting to take a leisurely drive down the Natchez Trace," says the Nashville BANNER. The Natchez Trace Parkway, visited by over thirteen million people a year, is scattered with communities full of history and hidden pleasures. Exploring the parkway and sights within thirty miles of either side of the Natchez Trace, the book provides directions to such sights as the homes of Helen Keller and W. C. Handy, Mrs. Rosenbaum's Frank Lloyd Wright home, a Victorian bed and breakfast, and an ancient canyon with tiny creatures that glow in the dark.
Since a 450-mile course is a lot of ground to cover, TRAVELING THE TRACE is extremely helpful in guiding you to historical places and hidden pleasures. "For anyone who has driven the Trace, the book is a must. If you're not acquainted with this Southern byway, the guide is invaluable," chimes SOUTHERN LIVING magazine. So the next time you have a long week-end and want to "getaway" and experience beautiful scenery, subtle mystery, and rich history, take this guide book and enjoy the ride.
