About this Item
First Edition (SD). Very nice book in very nice dust jacket. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the front and spine is still bright. There is a nice decoration on the front covers as well. There is a little bit of color fade at the top edges of the front and rear cover. The spine is a slightly lighter blue than the front and rear. The cover edges and corners are in nice shape. The bottom edge of the spine has a tiny sliver of color fade. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers, front and rear, form the same blue-and-white illustration by Charles E. Pont ( 'Charles Ernest Pont was a French-born Swiss-American artist and Baptist minister. Although his ministerial career was not particularly noteworthy, he was a prolific artist in many media including watercolor, printmaking, oil, pen and ink, and pencil. His framed art not only hangs in hundreds of private and public collections, but can also be found in many realms of graphic design, including book and magazine illustration, greeting cards, sign painting and calligraphy, murals, typographic design, and decorative papers. While his style evolved with the times in which he lived, and was particularly influenced by modernism in the 1930s, he is best known for the fine precision of his prints and the realism of his watercolors.' The pages are in very nice condition. They are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. As is nearly always the case, handful of pages are a little jagged at their middle edge. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. Despite its age, the jacket is very clean. Again there is a little bit of fade off the top edge of the front cover. The spine is also faded from the light blue to tan. The wear is quite minor, teeny tiny losses at the front top edge, a tiny one at the top edge of the spine, and two little ones at the bottom edge of the spine. The flaps are in very good shape, very clean as well. There is a narrow line of color fade off the top edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'These poems, especially the sonnets, are wrought with seemingly effortless finish, and high artistry; but no effort, no technique could impart what E. Merrill Root calls 'her affirmation and splendid surge, her ardent humanity,' were they not inherent in her very fibre. The winged chariot carries us across the troubled world, then lifts us above earth that we may come back refreshed to grapple anew with the riddle of living. Here is a reaction to the pain, the joy, the beauty of life for which bewildered mortals seldom find words.'. Seller Inventory # 004938
