Paris, octavo, three volumes: [645, [1] p.; 618, [1] p.; 756 p.]. ***CONTENT: Charles-Pierre-Mathieu Combes (1801-1872) was a French engineer, later Inspector-General of Mines and the Director of the School of Mines in Paris. His name is on the Eiffel Tower. These volumes are his celebrated and exhaustively comprehensive treatise on mining and mine operation. Chapters describe the exploration for and discovery of coal beds, valuable minerals, ores and commodities, surface mining and underground excavations, digging methods, timbering, walling and mine ventilation, mining equipment, extraction and transport of mined products, water problems, and much more. Specific mines and localities are frequently noted. The atlas volume accompanying these three text volumes is not here present. ***CONDITION: These volumes are complete and in Good condition, bound in the original green moiré cloth and with the original gilt-lettered maroon calf title labels on the backstrips. The covers are sound but worn at the corners and spine ends; spine labels on vols. 1 and 3 chipped with some loss. Joints and hinges starting but strong, bindings very firm. The text pages are typically quite fresh, clean and bright, with only occasional foxing spots; the covers and some pages in vol. 3 show old tide-mark evidence, but all pages are very legible. No library or previous ownership stamps or labels. This is a useful set of a very scarce publication in the original bindings. Not in BMNH.
