Édition originale de cet influent traité d'optique physiologique portant sur l'harmonie des couleurs. L'auteur en avait donné une ébauche dans sa conférence Les premiers éléments de la science de la couleur (Mulhouse, 1884). L'ouvrage est illustré de nombreuses figures in-texte et de 14 belles planches en couleurs (chacune accompagnée d'un feuillet explicatif) réunissant un total de 89 nuances en divers arrangements. Les planches 1 à 7 ont été reproduites en chromolithographie par la maison Monroq ; les planches 8 à 13, pochoirs contrecollés sur feuillets, ont été réalisées par J. Zuber et cie « par les procédés de fabrication propres aux papiers peints » ; la dernière planche présente un nuancier de 12 couples de couleurs complémentaires en 24 échantillons de laine teintée contrecollés sur feuillet imprimé. Rosenstiehl appuie son étude sur les travaux de Goethe, de Maxwell, de Young ? dont il cherche à identifier précisément les trois couleurs fondamentales ? et surtout sur le cercle chromatique de Chevreul dans le but d'étendre son application aux harmonies et aux gammes. Fondé sur une tradition scientifique, l'ouvrage s'adresse toutefois à un public d'artistes et d'esthètes. Rosenstiehl affirme en effet : « Montrer à l'artiste quelles sont les données scientifiques certaines sur lesquelles il peut s'appuyer ; lui indiquer dans quelle mesure les lois de la vision des couleurs sont utilisables, tel est le but de ce livre. » (p. v) Il promet ainsi de livrer les méthodes permettant de trouver « les couleurs qui s'adaptent bien à un dessin déterminé, et comment l'une de ces couleurs ayant été fixée arbitrairement et a priori toutes les autres couleurs du même dessin en déduisent logiquement ». (pp. vii-viii) L'application pratique des travaux de Rosenstiehl s'étend à tous les domaines, de la peinture à la photographie à l'habit en passant par l'ameublement, et aucun élément n'est négligé. Ainsi, selon l'auteur, on ne peut que remarquer « la curieuse coïncidence qui existe entre la couleur des meubles en acajou et en palissandre et le teint de la personne brune à peau mate, tandis que les bois d'érable et de noyer correspondent plutôt aux cheveux blonds. » (p. 252) Pionnier de la coloration artificielle, Daniel Auguste Rosenstiehl (1839-1916) enseigna la chimie à l'école de Mulhouse et exerça comme chimiste dans la maison Thierry-Mieg et Cie, spécialisée dans la production d'étoffes imprimées. Statutory Right to cancel
You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, Librairie-Galerie Emmanuel Fradois, 5 rue de Cambodge, 75020, Paris, France, +33 06 72 05 01 03, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.
Effects of cancellation
If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or Librairie-Galerie Emmanuel Fradois, 5 rue de Cambodge, 75020, Paris, France, +33 06 72 05 01 03, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
