First edition, rare in the jacket, of this account by President Theodore Roosevelt's sons of their expedition to China, during which they became the first Westerners to obtain a giant panda specimen, which remains on display at the Chicago Field Museum. "A gripping account of a hunting and scientific expedition to western China, the book was also a rare travelogue describing remote areas of Szechwan, Yunnan, and Sinkiang provinces. Not only did the Roosevelt brothers collect thousands of birds and animals for the Field Museum in Chicago, but they also pushed deep into areas that were essentially unknown to Westerners" (Ellsworth, p. 58).
