Item description from seller

Octavo. viii, 499, [5] pp. 8.5" x 5.5" SOCIOLOGY OF LYNCHING As racial tensions boiled under the pressure of the Great Depression and Jim Crow laws, lynchings increased significantly in 1930. The Commission on Interracial Cooperation had been formed over a decade earlier hoping to educate white southerners on the worst racial abuses; they turned their eyes toward lynching, assigning Arthur Raper, CIC research director and chief investigator, to conduct a sociological examination of the twenty-one attacks in the United States and suggest methods to curb the brutality. The Tragedy of Lynching is the summary of his study, published in 1933. One of the first white Southern researchers to analyze racial violence, Raper realized that mobs were not merely spontaneous but occurred where local communities and governance were complicit and socioeconomic conditions caused strain, bolstering the anti-lynching movement with empirical data and actionable recommendations. Presented here is a first edition. Touch of wear spine tips, near fine in very good dust jacket with 3" split front joint, light wear and toning extremities, in mylar cover. Full black cloth, in printed dust jacket ($2.50).…
