8vo. pp. 2 p.l., iv, v, 473. complete with dedication leaf. later half calf (extremities rubbed, upper covers sunned, repair to inner margin of first few leaves, bookplate removed from rear paste-down). First Edition. Shirreff toured the major cities of New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Mississippi and Upper Canada from April to November, 1833. Chapters XII-XXI, pp. 81-183, relate his impressions of colonial life in Queenston, Hamilton, York, Cobourg, Peterborough, Montreal, Galt, Guelph, Goderich, St. Thomas, Chatham, Amherstburg, the Talbot settlement, the community of the Children of Peace, a religious sect founded by David Willson, and along the banks of the Grand River. The last section (pp. 323-473) is wholly devoted to a critical assessment of the state of agriculture in the two countries, stressing the superior advantages of settlement in the States over the relatively poor prospects in Canada.
