Item description from seller

First edition of Fisher's Himalayan travel narrative, illustrated largely with her photographs. Her work traces a journey through Darjeeling, Sikkim, and the Himalayan borderlands, combining mountain travel with encounters in Buddhist monastic communities. Fisher (1879-1980), an American educator and missionary, later became a leading advocate of international literacy work in India. Written during her years in India with her husband, Methodist bishop Frederick Bohn Fisher, they followed "the route of the Everest climbers, and went on to spend some time with the lamas (priests) of the lamassaries of Sikhim and Nepal to the very border of Tibet" (front flap). Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece, full-page illustrations. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and decorated with white and green mountain design, top edge gilt. With dust jacket. Modern book label of Grace H. Brown, attorney and counsellor, to front pastedown. Ends and corners rubbed, minor abrasion to rear pastedown; jacket unclipped, chips with some minor loss to ends and corners. A near-fine copy in very good jacket indeed.…
