This lovely book is a photographic record of the masterly stone sculptures and wood carvings of German Gothic artist Tilman Riemenschneider of Wurzberg. The text, which is in German, is by Leo Bruhns, and the excellent black-and-white photographs are by Helga Schmidt - Glassner. The book was published by Karl Robert Langewiesche in Königstein im Taunus in 1956, as part of their "Die Blauen Bücher" series. This was the first paperback printing of copies 1 - 20,000.
Tilman Rieschneider was born circa 1460 in Heligenstadt, Thuringia, but spent most of his life in Würzberg, Bavaria. He died there in 1531. Riemenschneider is considered to be one of the leading masters of Gothic stone sculpture and wood carving. He spanned the period between the Gothic and the Renaissance. He created many tomb effigies and also received Church commissions for works such as altars. These works by Riemenschneider are considered to be some of the most outstanding of such. Leafing through the marvelous photographs by Helga Schmidt - Glassner, one is struck over and over at the mastery of Riemenschneider's handling of both stone and wood. The largest collection of Tilman Riemenschneider's work may be viewed at the Fortress Marienberg in Würzberg. This is a truly lovely book.
