Contains a selection of stories from the author's first book, published in 1927; as well as some written since 1939. Taken from one of these stories, the book's title is chosen, according to the publisher, partly because the feeling that 'respectable people are as alarming as tigers (and less handsome)' is common to many of Jean Rhys's characters. There is also much astringent humour in this story; often replicated across the author's other works. Condition (dj): see images. Intact but with edgewear and several obvious closed tears. Condition (book): gilt titles at head and tail of the spine on the rose coloured cloth; which is slightly faded along some of the book's margins. Mild internal tanning, with ink signature on the first front free endpaper (ffep). One of the ffeps also has some modest tearing/and slight looseness from the book block (image). The Contents page has small markings in ink beside the following stories: Mixing Cocktails, La Grosse Fifi, and Vienne (cf relevant image). Bookseller's sticker on front pastedown (Foyles). pp. 236. 12mo (large, +/-). Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping & postage charges. Proceeds to Amnesty International. Abe2627.…
