Ver Sacrum ("Sacred Spring" in Latin) was the official magazine communicating the artistic and creative ideals of the Vienna Secession. Conceived and founded by Gustav Klimt and Max Kurzweil, the periodical had a six-year run from 1898 through 1903 and comprised drawings and graphic designs in the style of the Secession movement together with literary contributions from distinguished European writers. The magazine is renowned for its contribution to typography, illustration, and graphic design; and was responsible for reshaping ideas about and influencing magazine (and magazine advertising) and book design to the present day. . Paper wrappers are lightly browned and toned around the edges, lightly soiled, bumped in places at the corners and edges, evidence of dampstaining along the bottom edge with shallow tidemarks hugging the edge, bottom fore-edge corner of the rear wrapper appears to be slightly torn away and missing, browning from offsetting to verso of front wrapper and the first page [Title] that extends about 6.5 cm into the adjacent leaves, there is similar dark offsetting to the recto of the rear wrapper and the last decorative woodcut from the Animal ABC, extending approximately 22.5 cm into the adjacent pages, caused by the inserted pages of advertisements (same paper stock as is used in the masthead strip at the front), still a very attractive magazine with wonderful depictions of animals, in very good condition.
