Oblong 4to, 36 wood engraved plates, each with 6-9 vignette subjects, illustrating the topography of a particular district, covering Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, Sussex, Kent and the River Thames, separate letterpress descriptions facing, original blind stamped green cloth lettered in gilt to upper board, minor rubbing, front free endpaper removed, else an excellent clean bright copy, FIRST EDITION; this collection of 320 images by Bonner of scenes south of the Thames fully exploited the range and quality of wood-engraved illustration fo the time, representive of the kind of extensive south coast tour popular in the 1840s with the coming of the railways. The plates would have been available as here in collective form as well as in district sections. The plates of Hastings and St Leanards, for example, represent in multiple images many local views not represented in any other early collection, and we surmise this may be true of other locatities. A work hard to find in this condition.
