Scarce English-language translation, paperback, 207 pages, NOT ex-library. Limited gentle wear, clean condition with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. -- The book presents forty reflections drawn from the words of Jesus in the Gospels, one per day over a forty-day period, each followed by the author's commentary, a practical challenge and space for the reader's own notes. The format is deliberately structured as an active programme rather than passive reading - Cardoso is explicit that the book is 'not for reading but for doing', and encourages readers to let each day's reflection settle before moving on to the next. The reflections address a broad range of everyday concerns through the lens of specific teachings from the Gospels. The tone is direct, conversational and accessible rather than academic or theological, aimed at a general audience regardless of denominational background. Cardoso's approach treats Jesus primarily as a practical thinker whose words carry immediate applicability to modern life, and the daily challenges are designed to bridge the gap between contemplation and action. The forty-day devotional format has deep roots in Christian spiritual practice, and this book sits within a well-established tradition of structured daily reading programmes, though its style is lighter and more informal than most. First published in Portuguese in 2024; this English edition appeared the same year. -- This devotional, built around brief sayings of Jesus, is organised so that each day focuses on one thought and its impact on ordinary life. It presents the words and attitudes of Jesus as a pattern for dealing with relationships, work, family responsibilities, anxiety, discouragement and everyday decisions. Each entry encourages the reader not only to meditate but to change specific habits and responses. A key theme is renewal of the mind: letting long-held, unhelpful patterns of thought give way to different ways of seeing problems, success and failure. For contemporary Christians and church groups, the book can serve as a structured programme for personal devotion, a guide for a short-term study group or a resource for mentoring and counselling conversations. It is easy to adapt for Lent, new believers classes or any season where a focused forty-day discipline feels appropriate.…
