About this Item
Small folio, 37pp., illustrated. Bound in contemporary 3/4 dark olive/brown morocco and mottled boards, with gilt spine title. Original cream wrappers bound in. Spine sunned, very gentle edgewear, and a lifted bookplate from the rear endpapers' altogether very good. Charming contemporary engraved bookplate of Arthur Swasey (co-founder of Cleveland's Warner and Swasey Company, manufacturers of telescopes and turret lathes), depicting the "36-inch Lick telescope." One of 500 copies, er the limitation page. A beautiful production, printed on Japan vellum, and with the plates presented alongside cancelled proofs. The "Extracts from Jefferson's Writings include his Inauguration Address, his first draft of the Declaration of Independence, and a Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom. We have not traced the book at auction in more than 40 years. We'll also add that this seems to be the only volume ever published in this planned series, as OCLC and auction records pull up no other titles under that series heading. A handsome volume celebrating the third President, and perhaps the most interesting of our Founding Fathers. A pleasing association, to boot. Seller Inventory # 11414
