Minor edge and corner wear, lightly scuffed and scratched, corners are bumped and rubbed, former owner's name and a date on the ffep, overall a very crisp and clean used copy! Wonderfully well-preserved! 196 very clean, unmarked and uncreased poetic pages nicely enhanced by black and white illustrations! Brown cloth with a gilt design on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. "In the matter of French reading, the average educated Englishman's view is probably this: French prose is wonderfully artistic and clear, and delightful to read. French verse is elegant, and in technique no doubt correct, but somehow it does not thrill, and it cannot as a rule be read with ease and pleasure. France, he repeats with Matthew Arnold, produces great prose, not great poetry."----from the Introduction Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
