Item description from seller

xiv, 1 leaf, 220 pp. Original cloth. Bowdoin College embossed stamp on title page, bookplate on front pastedown. Rear joint starting, top 1/2 inch of rear joint worn. Pencil notes on verso of rear flyleaf. Old paper spine label. Else Very Good. Royal Institution Actonian Prize Essay. A mostly negative review of the book in the Nov. 20, 1873 issue of Nature concludes, 'in one thing Mr. Henslow has done great good: he has shown that it is consistent with a full dogmatic belief, to hold opinions very different from those taught as natural theology some half century and more ago.' George Henslow was the only son of John Stevens Henslow (1796-1861), Charles Darwin's mentor. In 1867, Darwin wrote a testimonial in favor of George Henslow's candidacy for the Professorship of Botany, Oxford. Henslow was Lecturer in botany at St. Bartholomew's Medical School, 1866-1890.
