Tess of the D'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman [First Edition]

Printed in November 1891 in an edition of 1,000 copies closely followed by a second issue of 500 copies in February 1862. This is a mixed issue set with Vols. I and III being the first issue and Vol. II the second. One of the few surviving sets still bound in the publisher's original tan cloth, blocked in gold on the front with a honeysuckle design, although sadly, the bindings are in poor condition. There appear to have been labels removed from the front of each volume which makes me think this set was originally owned by Mudie's Lending Library. All three vols have cracked hinges and general grubbiness with markings to the plain endpapers, some finger-marking and a few small stains. However, there is no foxing so they could be cleaned up and rebound. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A fair set only but a complete set of the scarce and desirable first edition nonetheless and a set that I've been happy to have on my shelf for many years.
