pp. 207. Folio, measuring 34 x 26 cm. Bound in contemporary three-quarters black leather over original cloth boards with title label affixed to the centre of the front board; fresh endpapers. Richly illustrated with a variety of in-text charts, tables, and vignettes, in addition to eight maps, plans, fold-outs, and engravings, all collated and complete as issued. Includes the exceptionally large "Map of a Portion of Rupert's Land, Surveyed and Examined by the Assiniboine & Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition in the Year 1858," housed within a custom archival pocket affixed to the rear pastedown in four parts, as issued. Restored extremities are unblemished; single unobtrusive institutional stamp to the margin of the title leaf. Otherwise, contents remain bright, clean, and unmarked within a firm, sound binding. Excepting occasional minor chips and very short closed tears (professionally mended where apparent), the map and geological fold-outs remain in uncommonly well-preserved condition. A near stellar copy, professionally restored, and perhaps the most complete we have handled of this important work, which is frequently found in poor condition, or lacking its maps and related fold-outs. Very Good+. References: Peel 382. For the English version, see Peel 365 and 367. Provenance: Bibliothèque Séminaire St-Augustin (Cap-Rouge). Bears the manuscript ink inscription and signature to the half-title leaf of François Bourassa (1813-1898), a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and an ardent opponent of Confederation; brother to artist Napoléon Bourassa (1827-1916) and uncle of noted parliamentarian and publisher Henri Bourassa (1867-1952). Exhaustively documents the 1858 Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition, commanded by Henry Youle Hind. A prominent professor of geology and chemistry at the University of Toronto, Hind had previously served as the geologist on the 1857 Red River expedition. His 1858 survey was a more extensive scientific undertaking commissioned by the provincial secretary, providing crucial data on the geology, topography, and agricultural potential of the Prairie Provinces. A foundational document of early Canadian scientific exploration, offering important geographical insights into Rupert's Land and the North-West Territories at-large, particularly amidst rapid westward expansion and exploitation.…
