Item description from seller

First edition. 8vo. pp. xiv, [313]-420; illusts., three folding maps including a map of the 'South Polar Regions to illustrate the paper by H. R. Mill'; some dust-soiling to margins at rear, else good in original printed wrappers, browned to spine with a little wear to head, some dust-soiling to borders. Mill's overview of Antarctic exploration was prompted by news of Amundsen's attainment of the South Pole in December 1911. The article is followed by a note of the telegram sent by the President of the RGS, Lord Curzon, to Amundsen in Tasmania. The map of the South Polar Regions which accompanies Mill's article shows the points reached by Amundsen in 1911 (the South Pole), Shackleton in 1909 and Scott in 1902, and is arguably one of earliest maps to include Amundsen's achievement.
