Item description from seller

The Telephone, the Microphone and the Phonograph by Count du Moncel. Authorized translation with additions and corrections by the author. Published by Harper & Brothers, Franklin Square, New York, 1879. Illustrated with 70 engravings on wood. First American Edition. A remarkably well-preserved nineteenth-century scientific and technological work covering the early development of the telephone, microphone, and phonograph during one of the most transformative periods in communications history. An important contemporary account from the dawn of electrical audio technology, richly illustrated throughout with detailed period diagrams and engravings. This copy is exceptionally clean and attractive for its age. Binding remains solid and secure, with clean, well-preserved endpapers and crisp interior pages. Only occasional light foxing is present from age. Covers show mild wear at the head and foot of the spine along with slightly bumped/bent corners, but overall the book presents beautifully. The illustrations are especially sharp and striking. A highly desirable volume for collectors of early science, telecommunications history, electrical engineering, or Victorian technology.

Store description

Driven by a lifelong passion for rare books and the stories they carry, I specialize in curating historically significant works that illuminate the evolution of human thought — from early science and natural philosophy to exploration, conservation, and cultural heritage. My interest lies not only in the rarity of the object, but in its ability to teach, inspire, and connect us to the past. My catalog includes antiquarian books, early printed works, manuscripts and treatises from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on natural history, science, exploration, and the preservation of the natural world. I'm especially drawn to works that document the early scientific imagination — from botanical studies and anatomical treatises to philosophical texts that predate modern scientific methods. You’ll also find books and ephemera related to wilderness exploration, wildlife studies, environmental stewardship, and the history of the American landscape, including materials on Southern Americana and the development of the U.S. National Parks. As someone based in Tennessee, I carry a deep respect for the region’s natural and cultural history, often reflected in my selections. I have a particular interest in provenance — volumes with notable ex-libris, inscriptions, marginalia, and ownership histories that offer a second layer of narrative. These marks of human connection and intellectual legacy are, to me, as valuable as the texts themselves. Each book I offer is part of my ongoing education — and my goal is to pass that learning on. Whether you’re a private collector, institutional buyer, or fellow enthusiast, I look forward to helping you discover works that are not only rare, but meaningful.
