1818. First edition thus (first translation by J.H. Hunt). xxi, [i] and 439pp. in volume I and [i], with 444pp. plus a 2 page catlogue in volume II. All edges gilt. Torquato Tasso (1544-1595) was an Italian poet of the 16th century. Jerusalem Delivered (Gerusalemme Liberata), first published in 1581, is probably his best known work, in which he depicts a highly imaginative version of the combats between Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the Siege of Jerusalem. This translation by J.H. Hunt, late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, also contains a life of Tasso and numerous notes. The two volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary or slightly later green full leather boards with gold titling and a simple design on the spines and gold bordering on the boards. All edges gilt. The cases of the books are in very good condition a little expected scuffing to the leather on the boards. The spine are slightly darkened with rubbing to the leather down the spine edges. The contents are tight and very clean apart from a few small and faint foxing marks. There is a lengthy contemporary inscription on the front free endpaper of the first volume and a name written on the front free endpaper of the second volume.
