First edition, first printing. This is a rare and important study of the tarot which cites early Gnostics, alchemists, Dante, and Jung amongst its sources. Campbell (1904-1987) was a professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who focused primarily on comparative mythology and religion. He is perhaps best known for the concept of the monomyth, a theory that set out that all mythic narratives are variations on the same story. This theory was highly influential both in an outside his academic field: for example George Lucas noted the impact of Campbell's work on the Star Wars saga. Campbell and tarot scholar Richard Roberts collaborated on this work, and it was praised by author Theodore Rozak as "the most serious study of the Tarot I have seen" (front wrapper). Octavo.
