A limited first edition of Toni Morrison’s Tar Baby, privately printed exclusively for members of The Franklin Library’s First Edition Society. This Franklin Library edition was issued in 1981 and illustrated by Walt Spitzmiller. Bound in full brown leather with elaborate gilt decoration to the front and rear boards, gilt lettering and ornamentation to the spine, raised spine bands, all edges gilt, decorative endpapers, and an attached satin ribbon marker. The binding is firm and square. The leather boards remain clean and attractive, with bright gilt decoration and only minimal evidence of careful handling. The gilt page edges retain a strong finish, with slight tonal variation visible under direct lighting. Interior pages are clean and unmarked. The ribbon marker is present. An attractive collectible first edition of Morrison’s fourth novel and a desirable addition to a Toni Morrison, African American literature, or Franklin Library collection.
