Item description from seller

°°° FIRST EDITION, CLOTHBOUND ORIGINALS WITH SLIPCASES; 4 VOLUMES, COMPLETE. As the Wen-hsuan is not a T'ang text, it is classified as a 'special issue' of the T'ang Civilization Reference Series': >The [Chao-ming] Wen-hsuan is an extensive literary anthology which includes the works of 130 authors. It was compiled by Hsiao T'ung (501-531), Prince Chao-ming of Liang Dynasty. It is the most important anthology of mixed genres in the history of Chinese Literature representing Han-masters like Ssu-ma Hsiang-ju and Yang Hsiung as well as 'Six Dynasties'-poets (e.g. Hsieh Ling-yun).< [see below, 'Eno', p. 3]; ''The main section is a concordance, arranged by pi-hua order (characters with identical stroke counts are ordered by the K'ang-hsi radical system). Under individual characters, the initial section lists all occurrences of the character outside fixed expressions (tz'u). This is followed by lists of occurrences of compounds in which the character in question appears first. Cross references (by means of an arrow) to compounds where the character appears in subsequent positions close the entry. A short monograph on editions of the text is located at the start of the opening volume (105 pages).''.(from R. Eno: 'Handbook of Reference Works in Traditional Chinese Studies, 2011; Part 13 'Literary Studies', page 4). - A VERY GOOD SET; OTHER VOLUMES OF THE SERIES IN STOCK. . . --- 'Tang Dynasty' (or Tang Empire) was an imperial reign of China from 618 to 907, with a break from 690 to 705 and is regarded as a cultural peak of Chinese civilization; it is considered the greatest age of Chinese Poetry and the first choice for classic-poetry studies in Japan as well. The Wen Hsuan (Wen Xuan) is one of the earliest and most important anthologies of Chinese poetry and literature: it was compiled by Xiao Tong (eldest son of Emperor Wu of Liang) and a group of scholars in Jiankang (today 'Nanjing') during Liang dynasty between 520 and 530, and is one of the world's oldest national literary anthologies.…
