About this Item
Oswald Train's copy with his Bookplate fixed to front pastedown, dated 5/19/52. Train was a collector/specialty press publisher of Prime Press and others. Checkerboard patterned cloth. No DJ. 26 stories. 4 b/w illustration plates. One by W.T. Benda. Translated from the French by Alys Eyre Macklin with introduction by Henry B. Irving. "Level inherited the mantle of Villiers de l'Isle Adam as a master of the conte cruel, though he was a less subtle exponent of the art; several of his stories were adapted for the stage by the notorious Grand Guignol Theater in Paris, and his ghoulish twists are unparalleled, save perhaps by Robert Bloch." - Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-129.
