DICKENS, Charles (1812–1870). A Tale of Two Cities. London: Chapman and Hall, 1874. First Edition Thus, in the original monthly parts. Two consecutive original parts, Nos. 40 and 41, containing the central portion of A Tale of Two Cities in Chapman and Hall’s Household Edition. Large Octavo (8vo). Original illustrated blue-green paper wrappers with publisher’s advertisements to the inner and rear covers. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings after Frederick Barnard, newly commissioned for the Household Edition. Published posthumously as part of Chapman and Hall’s Household Edition of The Works of Charles Dickens, the first collected edition to introduce an entirely new program of illustrations rather than reuse those from the original serial and book publications. A Tale of Two Cities appeared in the Household Edition in 1874 with illustrations by Frederick Barnard. The present Parts 40 and 41 form consecutive portions of its original monthly publication and do not constitute the complete Household Edition serialization of the novel. Contents with scattered foxing, heavy on some edges; mixed interiors; some pages with tears, chips, foxing; others, clean and unmarked and intact. Plates remain intact, complete, and less effected by foxing. Original wrappers with edge wear, chips, and short tears. Overall Fair (due to several pages of tears and foxing), a good to fair pair of original parts in the publisher’s pictorial wrappers.
