The book is based on seven years of research in the documents of the National Socialist period that have come to light during and since the trial. The author has worked in research centers in Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Nuremberg, London, Washington, and Jerusalem. He has also interviewed scores of people, from everyday citizens to the former heads of the Nazi State; he has talked with survivors of the extermination camps, to prisoners of war, to simple German soldiers, as well as to members of the German High Command.
