1st edition. 5.5 x 3.25 inches. [xxiv] + 88pp. 12mo. 18th Century sprinkled calf, smooth spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, gilt bird's-head device to top compartment. A fine copy. Of great rarity. At the time this was published it was believed that the wells would become a new Bath but it was not to be, and they gradually fell into disuse. The wells in question were discovered in the 1640s in the hamlet of Sydenham, and were referred to as early as 1653 by Nicholas Culpeper, with later visitors including John Evelyn and George II (see Hembry, The English Spa, 1560 - 1815, p. 101). Eleven copies on ESTC, no copy traced at auction since 1960. ESTC R13465; Wing P1691 Smith pg 238.
