1st edition. Book size 9 x 5.5 inches, pp. xv + 1 (errata list) + 302, all edges uncut, hardback in publisher's binding. Book condition - Good plus ; moderate foxing of preliminaries rapidly diminishing into the textblock wih just very occasional edge spots, pencil inscription (" Guy D. Morison , Aberdeen ") on the flyleaf, inner hinges with a little splitting but boards very secure and binding firm ; publisher's green cloth spine, orginal paper title label and paper covered boards ; corners a little bent but firm, boards' edges with some rubbing and loss of paper, back dustywith some small marks and patches of tanning, the spine has been re-backed with the original spine laid on, the re-back cloth is a reasonable match with the original so as not to be obtrusive, the original spine shows losses at the head and tail and is quite stained with loss of colour, the spine label is rubbed such as to leave only 'Major ' and 'Treatise' as complete, the front and back hinges are intact, the front is dusty with minor marks. " The principal object which the author of this work proposed to himself was to give such information as would enable the Horticulturist to free himself from the most formidable of his insect enemies. With this object he has for several years devoted himself carefully to the observation of the habits and history thosse animals , and has tried a great number of experiments for their destruction, the result of which he now lays before the public. " (from the Preface ). The contents take the form of sections on each plant ( egs Apple Tree, Pear Tree, Peach and Nectarine, Gooseberry Bush, Cauliflower, Turnips, Lettuce, Cucumbers, etc ) and discussing the pest insects of such. With many of these he discusses (sometimes with disparaging comments) the control methods of other authors before setting out his preferred method. The Appendix has a variety of subsidiary items - "Decription of a Smoking Bellows ,Descripton of the Whisks , Garden Engines, Growth of Tobacco and Preparation of Tobacco Water ; recipes for making various insecticides ; the final four pages contain a list of the Subscribers .
