First printing of the true first edition of B. S. Johnson's scarce third experimental novel. A first-person description of a three-week voyage on a deep sea fishing trawler that tries to get to the heart of the human condition. Jacket design by John Holden. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Edges of boards just slightly rubbed. Top corner tips slightly creased. Page block edges slightly foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally near fine with no inscriptions, just a short unobtrusive line mark to the front free endpaper. Pages clean. No foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 27s 6d net. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed and creased. The non-laminated edges of the dustwrapper are slightly darkened. The dustwrapper is bright and unfaded, even to the spine. No chips. No tears. No significant creasing. ***183 pages. 222mm x 124mm. ***'B. S. Johnson's third novel is as original and well-written as "Travelling People" and "Albert Angelo", but in a far more subtle way. His descriptions of trawling and the sea are convincingly authentic, and his chief character's harrowingly honest memories and reflections add a counterpoint to make a serious statement of the author's attitude towards truth and the human condition.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Bryan Stanley William Johnson (5 Feb 1933 - 13 Nov 1973) was an English experimental novelist, poet and literary critic. He also produced television programmes and made films. Johnson became depressed by his failure to succeed commercially and by mounting family problems. On 13 Nov 1973, aged 40, he took his own life. Johnson's following at the time of his death was small if enthusiastic, but he quickly acquired a posthumous cult following, helped by a critically acclaimed film adaptation in 2000 of the last novel of his to appear in his lifetime, "Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry."' (Wiki) ***First printing of the true first edition, complete in the original dustwrapper in nice, collectable condition, albeit with the small ink mark mentioned. Of interest to collectors of the experimental work of B. S. Johnson. First editions of this experimental novel are extremely hard to find now. If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Orlando Booksellers, Lincoln, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.

Shipping terms

For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging materials; any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only; for the UK, our standard rate is for first class, and the priority rate includes tracked (signed for) delivery; for International sales, our standard rate is for Airmail delivery, and the priority rate is for tracked (International signed for) delivery. We would prefer that you choose the priority rate (tracked option) for higher value books of say £50 or more. Please note that we will always reduce shipping fees where appropriate e.g. for smaller (lighter) books when we accept your order. For heavier books and sets etc. we will often 'soak up' the extra cost, but on occasion, we may need to charge more than the quoted shipping fee. However, customers will always have the option to either accept or decline the revised order amount. We will also reduce the overall shipping fee for multiple orders. We will endeavour to ship all books within two business days of receiving your order.
