Item description from seller

NY: D. Appleton, 1904. First edition. Ribbed pumpkin colored binding with illustrated gilt panel on the front board. Elaborately illustrated with 8 full page plates, frontispiece; textual illustrations and decorative borders throughout giving the sense that you are living inside the stories and songs. Unlike the Remus tales, they are presented in narrative verse and song rather than prose. 26 distinct stories and songs, except the "Tar-Baby", were newly written for this volume and expanded to include humorous folk pieces. Dialect and illustrations may offend. Copy of Harris Merton Lyon (1882-1916) American short story writer born in Santa Fe with his sardonic bookplate and an inscription on the rear endpaper (upside down) "To Belle from Harris". Picture of J.C. Harris pasted in under the bookplate on the front endpaper. Text slightly musty from storage, avoid if sensitive.
