Item description from seller

(Rare early 19th Century educational books, Primers, Personal edification, Celestial, Astonromy, Geography, Travel, ). A Short System of Polite Learning, Being an Epitome of the Arts and Science, for the Use of Schools, by Daniel Jaudon. Published 1806, Philadelphia. First American Edition, improved by J. Jaudon. Fine early armorial custom book plate (of Charles Baldwin) to front paste down.210 pages. Engraved frontis [splendid full page engraving of a teacher instructing students inside an ornamental room with a large world globe, book cases full of books, a hot air balloon, etc.]. Also a full page engraved diagram map of the Solar System. Fascinating range of contents covered in high-spot overview outline format, aimed at personal edification and enlightened social conduct of the reader. This includes Politics, Governments of the World, geography & topography, math, various sciences, astronomy, rhetoric, mythology, music, commerce, physics, geology, rainbows, logic, ethics, chemistry, snow, religion, theology, etc. Small compact pocket size of the book allowed for easy transport for study by the owner. Contains a brief [but very early and potentially significant] printed mention in early American society of the field of Metaphysics, not to mention a wide range of other topics. Period full calf American leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering on contrasting red leather label. Joints cracked, front cover loosened and approaching detached, but otherwise text block remains clean, tight, and sound. Book remains relatively well preserved and attractive on the shelf. It displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, the age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. A rare book, this example unique in the original binding and preserved as found. Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique item survives. Book Measures c. 6" H x 5" W.[B380].
