Early full calf with leather spine label. 8vo. 297 pages plus 5 engraved plates. First American edition. Large folding table in middle of text. With notes and additions by Thomas C. James. An early book on obstetrics and midwifery with descriptions of types of difficult labors and their management. The author refers to his own extensive practice and there are chapters on natural and difficult labor, signs of a dead child, twin children, ruptures or lacerations, convulsions, retention of the placenta, the use of instruments in midwifery, cesarean operations, premature labor and many other topics. The five full-page engravings show a well-formed pelvis; the entrance or superior strait of a well-formed pelvis; the inferior strait of the same, and two plates show a deformed pelvis. Condition-wise this is a good plus copy with scuffing and wear to the spine and with the front cover starting to detach from the spine. The covers have some edgewear and there is a dark stain near the bottom corner of the front cover. Internally there is a long ink notation on the flyleaf and a whited-out inscription on the following blank. The remainder of the text is in very nice condition with a mininum of foxing and wear.
