Publisher's black buckram boards with silver lettering to spine. Slight foxing to edges of text block. Name and date (5th October 1938) in pencil to f.f.e. In unclipped dust jacket with original price of 7/6 to flap. Dust jacket rubbed with some tears, creases and chips to edges and about 1 sq cm loss to head of rear panel. Tape repair to reverse. (Please see photographs.) Complete with all 11 foldout pages with music annotations for different instruments and photographs of the musicians. The reader was encouraged to cut out the relevant sections along a line at the inner margins and it's rare to find a copy that's left uncut/complete. *** First UK edition. Copyright page states first edition, 1936, but title page carries the (UK publication) date 1937. The American first edition has orange-brown boards and was issued with a different dust jacket. The photographic frontispiece is different too: this UK edition features Louis Armstrong with his orchestra in 1936 (rather than the portrait that is used for the UK dust jacket). *** Swing that Music contains Louis Armstrong's autobiography followed by a piece by Horace Gerlach about his music and 11 foldouts with sheet music. Introduction by Rudy Vallee. A very good copy of this scarce publication. Seller Inventory # 001129

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Armstrong wrote most of the biographical material, which is of a different nature and scope than that of his other, later autobiography, Satchmo. He covers in intimate detail his life until his 1922, his move to Chicago but Swing That Music also covers his days on Chicago's South Side with "King" Oliver, his courtship and marriage to Lil Hardin, his 1929 move to New York, the formation of his own band, his European tours, and his international success. With examples of swing music in the form of sheet music by various musicians. With B&W photos & an introduction by Rudy Vallee & a foreword by Dan Morgenstern. /// This is a 3rd impression paperback in fine condition. (180 pages & 20 pages of introduction).
