Item description from seller

First edition, first printing of McCarthy's fourth novel, in its original dust jacket Publisher and Year : New York: Random House, 1979 Edition : First edition (stated), first printing, with the number line starting with "2", as called for (this was the publisher's practice at the time). No second printing of this edition was produced. Original dust jacket, retaining the price of $12.95 on the front flap. One of approximately 5,000 copies. Condition and Description : Octavo, black cloth spine stamped in gilt, cream paper boards with gilt monogram, 479 pp. Horizontal scratch to the rear board, with minimal wear otherwise. Light spotting to the edges. Faint Random House remainder mark to the top edge. Hinges and binding tight. Blind debossed prior owner stamp to the front free endpaper; otherwise unmarked, with no writing or underlining. A couple of age spots in the first several pages. The dust jacket exhibits just a hint of fading to the spine (mainly the first two letters of the title); some scratching and surface wear to the front and rear panels; light edgewear; and a little toning to the upper portion of the rear panel. Select close-ups are provided at the end of the photo sequence. Preserved in archival mylar. "But there are no absolutes in human misery and things can always get worse." Suttree is a semi-autobiographical novel set in 1950s Knoxville, Tennessee, unfolding over four years as Cornelius Suttree rejects his privileged background to live alone on a houseboat and fish the Tennessee River among the city's outcasts. Written over roughly twenty years, the novel marks a sharp break from McCarthy's earlier fiction. Whereas his earlier books are lean, grim, linear, and rooted in isolated Appalachian settings, Suttree is urban, episodic, expansive, and openly comic. It stands as the capstone of McCarthy's Tennessee period. Inventory ID: 336 - 099 - 282.…
