A Survey of Physics: A collection of Lectures and Essays; by Max Planck; translated by R. Jones and D. H. Williams; Methuen & Co. Ltd, London, 1925. First edition. Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck (1858 – 1947) was a German theoretical physicist. He was awarded the 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the services he rendered to the advancement of physics by his discovery of energy quanta". Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, primarily in his role as the originator of quantum theory and one of the founders of modern physics, which revolutionized understanding of atomic and subatomic processes. He is known for the Planck constant, hunits, now called Planck units, expressed in terms of physical constants. The Planck relation, E= h, states that the energy of a photon is proportional to its frequency. In 1905, Albert Einstein published three papers in the journal Annalen der Physik. Planck was among the few who immediately recognized the significance of the special theory of relativity. Thanks to his influence, this theory was soon widely accepted in Germany. Planck also contributed considerably to extend the special theory of relativity. Planck had been appointed dean of the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin, whereby it was possible for him to appoint Einstein to Berlin and establish a new professorship for him (1914). Soon, the two scientists became close friends and met frequently to play music together. This book compiles his philosophical and scientific writings outlining the transition from classical physics to the quantum era, famously detailing his own struggle to discover quantum theory. The essays delve heavily into the philosophical underpinnings of scientific discovery, arguing for the abandonment of mechanical pictures of nature in favour of thermodynamics. The book concludes with Planck's Nobel Prize address ("The Origin and Development of the Quantum Theory"), providing a first-hand account of how he derived quantum theory to solve the black-body radiation problem. This book, 184 pages is in near-fine condition. It has a contemporary ownership signature and a bookseller’s sticker from Cambridge. A terrific copy of the very scarce first edition. Often reprinted.…
