An illustrated first edition 1935 survey of British art styles in the manufacturing industry, particularly in the realm of furniture, metalwork, and pottery. First edition.Illustrations include a frontispiece and 100 plates accompanying the text survey. These plates show direct visual examples of the favoured art and design styles of the day. Details of a 1935 survey carried out by Henry G. Dowling on British industrial art and design styles. This research carried out for this text contributed to the Royal Academy Exhibition of British Art in Industry, which also debuted in 1935. This text examines the main features of British art and design craftsmanship, particularly within interior decoration, furniture, metalwork, and pottery.Starting in the 1920s, there was a high level of interest in raising the standards of design in British manufacturing styles, in order to improve overall public taste. Dowling's aim within this work was to analyse the 'importance of design to industry' so that a closer relationship between art and industry in modern Britain could be formed.Collated, complete.
