Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 20 cm. Weight 150 gr. Wrappers, 145 pp. The book in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Upper right corner of the title page is damaged and restored, otherwise perfect condition. August Mälk (1900-1987) was famous Estonian novelist, playwright and politician. Mälk fled to Sweden in 1944 and served as the chairman of the Estonian Writers Union Abroad from 1945 to 1982. Mälk's first works of fiction appeared in periodicals in 1920. Early period of creation pointed to search his own literary style and ranging from New-Romanticism to Naturalism. The most significant work of this period is realistic novels collection "Surnud elu" about tragic fate of a man recovered from epilepsy, who cannot find a niche for himself. He feels rejected and travels from village to village. The man can not escape the situation and lay hands on himself. Book's remarkable avant-garde cover design by famous Estonian artist Peet Aren (1889-1970). He studied at the most progressively minded school of arts in St.Petersburg the Higher Art School of the Imperial Society for Promoting Arts, later trained in Vienna and Munich. Tutor at the Higher Art School Pallas, member of the Tartu School. Parallel with painting work Aren designed banners, calendars, brochures, books, journals, ex libris and financial graphic art. Early graphic art works expressed the national romantic and stylising mannerof the "Mir Iskusstva", later he turned to Expressionism and Art Deco. Seller Inventory # 8
