Crowood Aviation Series - - First Edition - - From the very beginning of World War Two the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the deadliest weapons in the RAF's armoury. Its high speed and manoeuvrability made it both effective and highly popular, and it is on the face of it hardly surprising that it was quickly decided to produce a version for the Fleet Air Arm for Operation from the Royal Navy's growing carrier fleet. - Adapted for carrier operation by the addition of an arrestor hook and folding wings, the Seafire performed well in the air but was notoriously difficult to land on a ship, and as a result Seafire casualties were very high. But it was nonethless an interesting aeroplane that saw service throughout the war and played a vital part in the Pacific war, including defence of the Iwo Jima landings. This highly illustrated book tells the whole story of an aircraft which, despite its impeccable pedigree, has often been overlooked. 174 p. many photos Hardcover with dust jacket, large format. Illustrated with b/w photographs and detailed drawings for the modeller. Always overshadowed by its far more famous sibling the Spitfire, the Seafire was an aircraft adapted initially in haste to fill a large gap in the Fleet Air Arm's fighter inventory. The first Seafires were developed from the early marks of Rolls-Royce Merlin-powered Spitfire, but although the structure was strengthened to absorb some of the landing loads characteristic of carrier operation, the airframe would exhibit some alarming failures, a trait that continued through the life of the type. The next series of Seafires were Griffon powered and followed their RAF counterparts in introducing blow canopies and, later, modified wing planforms. Seller Inventory # 026459
