Item description from seller

In collaboration with Cliff May. 4to. 160 pp. Profusely illustrated with photographic reproductions, renderings, and floor plans. Tan and yellow cloth with black lettering in publisher's dustjacket. Shelfwear; minor spotting to upper page edges; else near fine in very good dust jacket (wear to extremitites; short closed tears & creasing on upper edge; small scrape on lower front cover). One of the earlier references for modern house design in the United States and the first totally devoted to the Western ranch house style popularized by Cliff May in the pages of Sunset Magazine. It is a fascinating study of the roots of the ranch style, and it is also a compendium of ideas for today's home builders. The ranch house's successful design for living - a rambling, one-story floor plan oriented to an extensive garden and one or more patios that functioned as "outdoor rooms". Never trained or licensed as an architect, Cliff May was an artist: a saxophone player turned furniture designer who expanded his scope first into staging mission style houses, then designing ranch houses, and ending by inspiring a whole housing movement.
