First printing, in the first-issue dust jacket. Publisher and Year: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926 Edition: First edition, first printing, with "stoppped" on p. 181. The other textual errors are present but are not relevant, as they also appeared in the second printing. First-issue dust jacket priced $2.00 and with "In Our Time" misprinted as "In Our Times" on the front panel. (Grissom A61a; Hanneman A6a) Condition and Description: Octavo, black cloth, gilt labels, 259 pp. A sharp copy of the book with minimal wear to the boards and labels. Secure hinges and binding, though with light gutter exposure in seven places, a very common fault of the edition (refer to pictures of pp. 89 and 201 for examples). Small round leather label to the front pastedown and a small bookseller ticket to the front free endpaper. A little pencil to the front pastedown, partially erased. No other writing or prior owner markings. Pages largely clean, with very occasional tiny and unobtrusive stains to the margins; one such example is shown. Dust jacket with significant losses, toning (especially to the spine, as usual), and some soiling and staining. Archival and removable tissue reinforcements to the verso securing tears and full splits at the front flap and rear spine joint. Housed in archival mylar. "I did not care what it was all about. All I wanted to know was how to live in it." The Sun Also Rises introduced Hemingway's pared-down prose and stoic emotional restraint, setting a new standard for American fiction. The novel established his voice and reputation overnight, capturing the disillusionment of the Lost Generation with clarity and force. Ranked #45 on the Modern Library's list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century, it remains a foundational work of modernist literature and one of Hemingway's most enduring achievements.
